Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) is a Central Public Sector Enterprise operating a major petrochemical plant at Lepetkata, Dibrugarh, Assam. The complex utilizes natural gas and naphtha as feedstocks to produce polyolefins like LLDPE, HDPE, and Polypropylene. Alongside its primary polymer products, BCPLs crackers and hydroprocessing facilities generate secondary liquid streams and chemical by-products. Among these is Slop Oil, a liquid hydrocarbon residue requiring controlled management, recovery, and commercial handling.Plant Operations and Management
In BCPLs integrated setup, proper management of slop oil is essential for environmental compliance, process safety, and operational safety:

Separation and Storage: Process effluent streams are routed through specialized oil-water separators (OWS) and effluent treatment plant (ETP) skimmers. The recovered hydrocarbon phase is transferred to dedicated slop oil tanks for settling and inventory holding.

Internal Reuse: Where feasible, lighter or treated portions of slop oil are recycled back into cracking furnaces or process units as heavy liquid fuel or supplemental energy feed.

Environmental Compliance: Uncontrolled disposal of slop oil poses environmental risks. BCPL operates under strict guidelines established by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) to prevent soil and groundwater contamination.
