HMEL C9 Cut (often supplied as C9 Solvent or C9/C9+ Heavy Aromatic Hydrocarbon Stream) is a specialized petroleum fraction produced by HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) at its integrated Guru Gobind Singh Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Bathinda, Punjab.

Obtained as a liquid stream during catalytic reforming, naphtha cracking, and pyrolysis gasoline (Pygas) processing, HMEL's C9 cut consists primarily of aromatic hydrocarbons containing 9 carbon atoms 

, such as trimethylbenzenes (pseudocumene and mesitylene), methylethylbenzenes, propylbenzenes, and indene, along with trace higher-boiling heavy aromatics.

Primary Industrial Applications

Thanks to its balanced distillation curve and strong chemical solvency, HMEL C9 Cut serves as a vital raw material and solvent across multiple heavy and fine chemical sectors:

1. Agrochemical Formulations:

   Acts as a premium solvent and carrier for active ingredients (pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides). It is extensively used in Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) formulations, enhancing active ingredient stability, penetration, and plant leaf coverage.

2. Paints, Coatings, and Varnishes:

   Serves as a diluent and solvent in stoving enamels, industrial paints, and anti-corrosive coatings. Its moderate evaporation rate prevents surface Defects like pinholing or blistering while ensuring smooth film flow.

3. Petroleum & Hydrocarbon Resins:

   Used as a feed fraction for thermal or catalytic polymerization to produce C9 petroleum resins, which are core ingredients in tackifiers, printing inks, and hot-melt adhesives.

4. Industrial Cleaners and Degreasers:

   Utilized in heavy-duty degreasing agents, printing ink cleaners, and metal surface preparation chemicals due to its ability to dissolve heavy oils, grease, and tar.

5. Fuel Additives & Blending:

   Integrated into industrial fuel blends or octane-improving additives due to its high heating value and aromatic profile.

Handling and Safety

HMEL C9 Cut is a flammable liquid that emits organic vapors. Standard safety practices require storing it in cool, well-ventilated locations equipped with flame-proof electrical fittings and static grounding connections during transfer. Personnel handling the compound should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and organic vapor respirators.
